Rinspeed E2 Concept - Auto Shows

Frank Rinderknecht, the famous Swiss tuner/visionary, likes to wow the Geneva auto show every year with concepts that are so bizarre they stand no real chance of going into production. This year is no exception with the futuristic Rinspeed iChange concept.

But for 2009, Rinderknecht is also presenting a more practical vision: the E2 concept. The E2 is based on the cutesy Fiat 500 Abarth, and the only real visible difference from the production Fiat is the screaming mango-metallic paint. The racing stripes applied to the Abarth are deleted, and the interior remains unchanged. The Abarth’s 135-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged four is tweaked to produce 160 hp, or as much as Abarth's own aftermarket "esseesse" (SS) package. The extra power is a welcome change over the standard configuration of the 500 Abarth, since the regular model is quick, but by no means really fast. After Rinspeed's fiddling, expect a top speed just north of 130 mph and 0-to-60-mph times of slightly over seven seconds.
